WHAT ARE VINS?

Every vehicle has a unique code that identifies exactly what it is. The unique code is called a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN of every vehicle conveys information including:

  • country of origin
  • car manufacturer
  • the engine code
  • model year
  • chassis number

Each vehicle’s VIN since 1981 is a 17-digit alphanumeric sequence containing both numbers and letters. Since VIN has been standardized, the results are accurate and uniform regardless of who is decoding the VIN.

For example, all VINs that begin with the number “1” are manufactured in the United States, while vehicles with the letter “J” that begin the VIN are manufactured in Japan. The first digit is always the country of origin.

  • Note If you’re worried about the security of your VIN, don’t. There is absolutely no risk in sharing your VIN. It is not related to your personal information, credit history or other information.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A VIN?

Your VIN uniquely identifies your specific vehicle, including options and build information, so it’s the most reliable way to find information that specifically applies to your vehicle.

For example, if you need to buy parts for your vehicle when you have multiple engine options between different model years, VIN will direct your parts experts to the exact parts that fit your vehicle.

You can also use the 17-digit VIN to run a vehicle history report or VIN check. You can look up service history, accident history, title status and see if there are any outstanding recalls with just the VIN.

A VIN can also be obtained if your vehicle is towed or crashed. Since one vehicle has its specific VIN number, it helps to easily identify your vehicle – yours!

WHY IS THE VIN IMPORTANT?

As mentioned above, the VIN number uniquely identifies your vehicle. Once the VIN is decoded, you can accurately retrieve details such as the car’s date of manufacture, engine size, and model year.

The VIN number ensures that the correct parts are fitted to your vehicle, especially when vehicle repairs or service are being performed. This means the correct oil filter is used for oil changes, and the correct brake size, tire size, and engine size are known to the technician for repairs.

It is important to provide YourMechanic with your correct VIN when making reservations or checking prices. This not only gives you the correct price for parts and workers, but also allows you to have the correct parts to repair your vehicle.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE VIN FOR MY CAR?

Your car’s VIN can be found in a few fairly common areas. There are several reasons:

  • Easily identify specific vehicles in situations such as traffic stops or vehicle repairs
  • Easy identification of suitable components
  • Check for matching numbers (e.g. for classic cars)
  • Multiple locations with one VIN location unreadable

Look at the rear frame . Older cars often find the VIN on the rear of the frame on the driver’s side depending on the tire. This can be difficult to spot and identify due to sprayed overtops, undercoats or obscure areas that obscure the number of corrosion or rust.

Look closely at the wheel behind the driver’s seat for a number stamped into the steel. It can be on the side or top of the frame rail, but it should be open even if it’s hard to read.

When booking your appointment with YourMechanic, please include your vehicle’s full 17-digit VIN at these locations.
