Review tracker Metacritic says that these are the best platform games of all time.
One of the most important types of games in history is the platform game. The genre was very important in getting the home console business back on its feet after the crash of 1983, and Super Mario Bros. was a big part of that. Also, most games in this genre are made with kids in mind and have easy-to-understand tools and ideas. This makes them a great way for kids or even adults to get into gaming.
Since Super Mario Bros. made the genre popular, there have been a lot of platform games for a wide range of systems. Every once in a while, a platformer comes along that really stands out and amazes critics, getting it a high score on the review site Metacritic.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps – 93
Ori and the Will of the Wisps was made by Moon Studios. It is a Metroidvania-styled platform-adventure game. Players are drawn in right away by the game’s beautiful graphics, which make each area a joy to explore. Critics were also pleased by the game’s touching story and the ease with which the main character, Ori, could move.
The game’s huge Metascore of 93 could have been even higher if it hadn’t had a few technical problems when it first came out, which have now been fixed.
Jet Set Radio – 94
Jet Set Radio, which was also called Jet Grind Radio, came out on the Dreamcast in 2000. In 2012, it came out on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita, iOS, and Android. The game stands out on this list because the characters you control move around on inline skates. This makes the game feel really different to play.
In Jet Set Radio, there are different ways to play, but in all of them, the goal is to get around the beautifully designed Tokyo map as quickly and correctly as possible to tag different spots with graffiti. People remember the game fondly not only because it had a unique way to play, but also because it had a great music that makes them feel nostalgic.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 – 94
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 was only available on the GBA in Japan when it came out in February 2003. It then made its way to Europe and North America in the months that followed.
The game is an improved version of the famous Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It has new features like a multiplayer mode based on the original Mario Bros. and voice acting for Mario and Luigi by Charles Martinet.
Super Mario 64 – 94
Super Mario 64 is one of the most important games ever made in the platform genre. The game was sold with the promise that it would take the gaming industry into the world of 3D, and it did just that by giving people one of the best platformers of all time.
Nintendo got Mario’s movement in 3D settings right on the first try. They also made levels with clever designs that are hard to beat even today.Even though Super Mario 64 doesn’t look like much by today’s standards, it’s still a lot of fun to play.
Celeste – 94
Celeste is an independent game that stands out from most other platformers because it has a full story. The story of the game is all about the main character, Madeline, who is trying to climb Mount Celeste. Madeline must not only face the challenge of climbing the mountain, but also often physically fight her own inner demons.
Along with its interesting story, Celeste’s high Metascore comes from its tight side-scrolling controls, which make sure that, despite how hard it is, 8 Ball Pool game never feels unfair or annoying.
LittleBigPlanet – 95
LittleBigPlanet was one of the most important games for the PlayStation 3. The system had a rough start because it was delayed a lot and cost a lot more than it should have. This caused many people to switch to the Xbox 360, which was a big hit. Sony needed a high-quality exclusive to get people’s attention, and LittleBigPlanet gave them just that in 2008.
Media Molecule made LittleBigPlanet, which stands out from the other games on this list because players can make their own levels and play levels made by other people online. The game’s online features were taken away in 2021, which is a shame.
Super Mario Galaxy – 97
One of the most creative platform games ever made is Super Mario Galaxy. The sci-fi setting of the game in outer space gave Nintendo the freedom to make levels with lots of creative ideas, like using gravity as a platforming challenge.
Fans of Super Mario Galaxy often say that the game has a warm, calming, and magical feel to it. This has helped the game stay in people’s minds for a long time and make it something they love.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 – 97
Nintendo rarely makes a straight sequel to a main Super Mario game, but they did so with Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo probably didn’t have to think long and hard about making a remake because the 2007 game’s clever designs and ideas had more life in them.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn’t worry too much about how it looks or what it’s about. Instead, Nintendo seems to have focused on making a collection of the best platforming levels ever made.
Super Mario Odyssey – 97
Super Mario games have always been known for being creative, and Super Mario Odyssey is no exception. Thanks to the new character Cappy, the game has a lot of new ways to play. For example, players can take and control enemies and other characters like Goombas, Bullet Bills, and even the T-Rex from the now-iconic trailer.
Along with a lot of different ways to play, each level has a lot of stars (called moons in Odyssey) that players can collect. This gives players who want to finish the game a lot to do for a long time.
