Africanized Honey Bees Require Extra Caution

Africanized honeybees, now more appropriately called aggressive honeybees, came to the US from South America. They have moved into many southern and western regions of the US.

There are no apparent physical differences between regular and Aggressive Honey Bees. Unless you are an entomologist with a magnifying glass, you will not be able to distinguish them until they are mad. The main differences are behavioral. Here are some examples: Regular honey bees forage during daylight hours only. Aggressive bees will forage day, night, rain, etc. When threatened, 5-10% of a regular honey bees colony will attack to defend their home. Under similar conditions, up to 50% of an aggressive honey bee colony will defend.

Swarming is when a portion of the hive leaves to form a new colony. This may appear as a ball of bees. The bees are somewhat more docile when the ball is just formed. They get testier as time passes. Because they work so hard and collect so much food, aggressive honey bees can swarm 20+ times per year, versus 2-3 times per year for regular honey bees. This increases the opportunities for interactions between humans and aggressive bees.

As development encroaches on previously natural areas, we have more interaction between humans and bees. For example, in Arizona (where the author resides), as desert flowers dry up, the bees move into the Cities for food and water.

Bees usually build hives in spaces that make it difficult for predators to enter: wall voids, attics, under sheds, sprinkler valve boxes, etc. If you see numerous bees entering a small hole in your house, block wall, valve box, etc., you may have a hive.

If you see a swarm or a hive, it is strongly Bienenanzug suggested that you call a professional to eliminate the bees. It is NOT RECOMMENDED that you eliminate the bees yourself unless you have the proper training and equipment, including a quality bee suit. You could endanger yourself, your family and your neighbors by antagonizing the bees.
