Vivid Sydney 2026 is shaping up to be one of the festival’s biggest years yet. From 22 May to 13 June, the festival will illuminate iconic precincts including Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. Built around four pillars—Light, Music, Ideas and Food—Vivid Sydney offers something for every kind of festivalgoer. Vivid Lights
Every year, Vivid Sydney turns the city’s most iconic precincts into an open-air gallery of light, art, projections and interactive installations. The Vivid Lights switch on at 6pm every day, and can be explored for free via the Vivid Light Walk—a free, unbroken 6.5km route threading through all the major Vivid zones. Lighting of the Sails: Opera Mundi
Location: Sydney Opera House
French multimedia artist Yann Nguema brings Opera Mundi to the shell-shaped sails of the Sydney Opera House, an original commission drawing on the elemental forces and natural transformations that inspired architect Jørn Utzon’s iconic design of the Opera House itself.
To take in the projections on the Opera House sails in their full scale, choosing one of the Vivid Sydney cruises would be your best shot, as an on-water view offers the best perspective of the illuminated artwork. The cruise experience is all-inclusive, with dinner and entertainment on board.
Our Connected City
Location: Circular Quay and The Rocks
Our Connected City is Vivid Sydney at its most theatrical. A synchronised light display links landmarks, waterfront structures and vessels across Sydney Harbour, all illuminating together to create one continuous, flowing spectacle across the skyline.
Vivid Music
Vivid Sydney isn’t just pretty to look at. The Vivid Sydney live music program is equally spectacular, covering headline acts at the Sydney Opera House, free outdoor gigs and other concerts.
Vivid LIVE
Location: Sydney Opera House
Vivid LIVE takes place at the Sydney Opera House, with a lineup that includes Mogwai, Matt Berninger of The National, Kae Tempest and Grammy-winning art-rockers Dry Cleaning, among many others. Book early, as tickets sell out fast.
Tumbalong Nights
Location: Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour
Tumbalong Nights brings 23 consecutive nights of free live music to Darling Harbour, spanning pop, indie, First Nations storytelling and world music. The lineup includes Mallrat, Matt Corby, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, and Korean artists Shaun and Jiselle making their Australian debuts, among many others. Grab food from a nearby truck and enjoy the atmosphere. No tickets needed.
Vivid Minds
Vivid Minds is the festival’s creative and intellectual pillar, and it has come a long way from when it was simply called Vivid Ideas, where speakers talked and audiences listened. Today, it covers two distinct experiences, thought-provoking talks from some of the world’s most compelling voices and large-scale interactive installations you can experience in person. The shift from Ideas to Minds reflects exactly that, it is no longer just about listening and thinking, it is about feeling and experiencing too.
Talks
The Creative Trailblazers series brings two unmissable names to Sydney this year for in-conversation sessions on creativity, culture and craft:
- Chloé Zhao: In Conversation: Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind Nomadland and Hamnet, appearing in Australia for the very first time.
- Sean Baker: In Conversation: Director of Anora and The Florida Project, celebrated for his bold, independent approach to storytelling.
Interactive Installations
Alongside the talks, this year’s program introduces large-scale interactive and performance installations that you can walk into, sit beneath and experience in person. It is ideas made tangible.
1. Cristal Palace
Location: Sydney Opera House Forecourt
This free outdoor spectacle transforms the Sydney Opera House Forecourt into a baroque ballroom. A gigantic chandelier hangs overhead, home to an airborne wind orchestra, while 29 performers deliver aerial trapeze, silk acts, clowning and dancing. Created by French outdoor theatre company Transe Express, it makes its Australian debut at Vivid Sydney 2026.
2. Wonderverse
Location: Australian National Maritime Museum
Created by Patch Theatre, Wonderverse is a magical 40-minute guided adventure designed for children aged 4 to 10. Kids explore a glowing forest, encounter shimmering fireflies and get lost in a world of light, play and imagination. Tickets are $25 per person, with sessions running day and evening throughout the festival.
Vivid Food
Sydney’s culinary scene gets its own Vivid glow-up this year, with a food program that is as bold and inventive as the light installations themselves.
Vivid Fire Kitchen
Location: Stargazer Lawn, Barangaroo Reserve
Free to enter and open every night from 6pm to 11pm, Vivid Fire Kitchen brings top Australian chefs together over open flame. The lineup includes Mark Best, Luke Mangan, Adriano Zumbo and MasterChef fan-favourites, with live tastings, chef conversations and NSW wine flowing throughout the evening.
Dream Feast
Location: The Mint, 10 Macquarie Street
NYC-based dining collective ARLO Communal serves a five-course feast inspired by two centuries of Australian domestic life, drawn from the Caroline Simpson Library Collection. Animated projections play across sandstone walls while DJ Munasib live-mixes an original trip-hop soundtrack. Runs from 2 to 5 June 2026, priced at $250 per person ($200 for Museums of History NSW members).
